Qi Gong

An awareness-based movement practice illuminating our innate abundant chi and the wisdom of the body

What is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong is a movement practice rooted in principles and patterns mapped out by ancient Chinese traditions. We move our energy in specific forms along intrinsic pathways, within and around the body.

Translated from Chinese, 'qi gong' means to 'work or move the chi (qi). It is considered an essential part of personal and spiritual health, as well as a therapeutic modality.

Qi gong involves slow, repetitive and focused movements that calm the nervous system and ground our awareness in the body. Developing the felt sense and intention (Yi) we become sensitive to chi flow, discover its qualities, and grow our capacity to move and rest as this powerful force.

Over time our chi is strengthened, amplified and refined.

Qi gong integrates breath and meditation with the physical movements and the standing forms.

It is a beautiful and flowing expression of our lifeforce.

Benefits of this practice

Qi gong practice can deepen our capacity to be Present – to be embodied, focused, and still, and through this to tap the wellspring of health and vitality.

We open the pathways for the free flow of chi, soften into constricted places in the body which cause discomfort or ill health, and develop more flexibility, balance and mobility.

Whilst the focus is on moving chi, the visceral body is involved, and the mind is engaged; it is an integrating practice. The outcome is vital energy, profound wellbeing, and an increased capacity for equinimity.

With practice, we experience deeper states of awareness, fully in the moment, outside of space, time and the world of constant stimulation.

How we do it -  Elemental
        Qi Gong

Our approach works with the five elements of nature (water, earth, fire, metal, wood) which exist in an interactive and reciprocal cycle. Each of the elements relate to different organs and systems within the body and to the environment and our lifestyles.

The focus is on maintaining the essential balance amongst the elements (internally and externally), and on nurturing and augmenting the chi available to each of us.

In each session we start with a warm up, then a chi cleanse of the organ or system we are working with. Then we strengthen, amplify and refine our chi through specific forms and movements. Sometimes we will 'walk with chi' which integrates the session practices and prepares us for moving with awareness in our day.

This practice is an expression of ancient medicine with contemporary mind-body understanding and application. It is suitable for all ages, abilities and orientations. No skills are necessary to attend.
